Advocating for Broadband Access at HBCU Panel Discussion

Updated: Jul 3, 2024

Dr. Cadavious M. Jones, Dean of the Division of Science and Mathematics at Rust College, recently participated in a pivotal panel discussion titled “Connectivity at Historically Black Colleges and Universities and the Impact of the ACP at these Institutions." The event featured FCC Chairwoman Rosenworcel, along with presidents and vice presidents from HBCUs across Mississippi.

The conversation focused on a critical issue: ensuring equitable access to broadband internet for all Mississippians, especially students at HBCUs. Chairwoman Rosenworcel highlighted the importance of connectivity in today's world, stating, "There's nothing in modern life that doesn't require high-speed internet access...without it, you don't have a fair shot at 21st century success."

This sentiment resonated deeply with Rust College and other HBCUs. Broadband access is essential for students to fully participate in online learning, research opportunities, and career development tools. The discussion around the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) also explored potential solutions for bridging the digital divide for students and surrounding communities.

Mississippi's recent allocation of $1.2 billion in federal grant money presents a significant opportunity to address these connectivity issues. The presence of Rust College representatives, including Dean Jones, at this crucial dialogue demonstrates the institution's commitment to ensuring its students have the resources they need to thrive in the digital age.
